iPhone Unknown part messages explained

Updated · Local 4, Centro Comercial San Eugenio, Av. de los Pueblos 20, 38660 Costa Adeje

Where do you find your iPhone's parts history?

On iOS 15.2 and later, open Settings › General › About. If any parts have been replaced, a Parts and Service History section appears, listing each repaired part with a label. Apple says display history appears on iPhone 11 and later (except iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation) and battery history on iPhone XR, XS and later. On iOS 15.1 or earlier, the phone shows an Important Display Message or Important Battery Message instead.

If your iPhone has never been repaired, the section doesn't appear at all.

What do Genuine Apple Part, Used and Unknown Part mean?

  • Genuine Apple Part: a new genuine part, verified and calibrated. Apple says genuine parts are individually calibrated with data stored at manufacture, which is retrieved to finish the repair.
  • Used: on iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18, a genuine part from another iPhone of the same model, calibrated with Apple's Repair Assistant.
  • Unknown Part: Apple shows this if the part isn't a genuine Apple part, isn't working as expected, or hasn't been verified and linked to the iPhone, for example because the repair wasn't finished.

When an Unknown part is detected, Apple says the iPhone shows a notification the first time you unlock it after the repair and another one five days later.

Does an Unknown part affect how the iPhone works?

Apple says the messages don't affect your ability to use your iPhone. What a non-genuine part can affect depends on the part:

  • Display: Apple lists possible missed touches, True Tone not working correctly, colour differences and lower maximum brightness, and says issues may appear after an iOS update.
  • Battery: Apple says the Battery Health information may not be accurate with an unverified battery.
  • Camera: Apple says a non-genuine camera may have compatibility or performance issues, such as poor focus.

Apple also says an Unknown part might affect the trade-in value of your device.

Why do some recent iPhones need Repair Assistant?

Repair Assistant is Apple's built-in step that verifies and calibrates replaced parts. It needs Wi-Fi, more than 20% battery and the latest iOS. Apple says Face ID and Touch ID can't unlock the device, make payments or sign in to apps until calibration is complete for those parts, and that on iPhone 18 Pro models the camera can't be used until a camera repair is finished in Repair Assistant or the phone is restored.

So on recent iPhones, ask whether the repair includes finishing that step, and what will show in Settings afterwards. Face ID specifics are in Face ID not working.

What should you ask before an iPhone repair?

  1. Which part will be fitted: original or compatible, and the price of each.
  2. What will appear in Parts and Service History afterwards.
  3. Whether it matters for you: if you plan to trade the phone in or sell it soon, an Unknown label may lower its value; if you'll use it until it dies, it may not matter.

At A1 Computers you can choose an original or a compatible screen, and you get both prices before anything is fitted. The trade-offs are explained in original vs compatible phone screens.

FAQ

What does Unknown Part mean on my iPhone?
Apple shows Unknown if a part isn't a genuine Apple part, isn't working as expected, or hasn't been verified and linked to your iPhone, for example because the repair wasn't completed. You'll find it in Settings, General, About, Parts and Service History.
Does an Unknown part stop my iPhone working?
No. Apple says these messages don't affect your ability to use your iPhone. Depending on the part, some features may not work as well: for a display, Apple lists touch, True Tone and brightness; for a battery, the Battery Health reading may not be accurate. An Unknown part may also lower the trade-in value.
What does Used mean in Parts and Service History?
On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18, a genuine Apple part taken from another iPhone of the same model can be calibrated with Repair Assistant. It then shows as Used rather than Unknown.
Can the Unknown message be removed?
Not by changing settings. The message reflects the part fitted. If a genuine part shows Unknown because the repair wasn't finished, completing Apple's Repair Assistant step can verify it. A non-genuine part keeps the message.
How much does a repair with a genuine or compatible part cost?
It depends on the model and the part. Send the model on WhatsApp to 641 780 077 or call 922 71 35 82, and you get the price of each option before any work starts. Diagnosis costs €15.
