What should you do if your phone falls in the pool or the sea?

Get it out, switch it off and don't plug it in. Apple says not to dry an iPhone with an external heat source or compressed air, and not to put it in a bag of rice; if an iPhone shows a liquid-detection alert, it says to wait until the port is dry before charging with a cable. Samsung tells owners of a water-resistant Galaxy that has been in the sea or a pool to rinse it in clean water for 1 to 3 minutes, dry it, and not to charge it until it is completely dry.

Water resistance is not a guarantee at the beach. Apple says splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent and can decrease as a result of normal wear, and that liquid damage isn't covered under warranty. In our experience salt water does the most harm, because the salt keeps corroding the board after the phone looks dry, so bring it in the same day if you can. Our water damage guide explains how a wet phone is opened and cleaned.

Why won't your phone charge after a day on the beach?

Usually sand, lint or moisture in the charging port. Samsung shows a Moisture detected alert and blocks cable charging until the USB-C port is dry; an iPhone can show a liquid-detection alert. Let the phone dry in the air, and don't push cotton buds, pins or keys into the port.

If it still won't charge once it is dry, try another cable and adapter. A port that only works at an angle, looks burnt or keeps showing the alert needs cleaning or replacing on the bench. The full checklist is in phone not charging after the beach.

What should you do if your phone is stolen on a night out?

Act from another phone or a laptop straight away:

  1. Lock or erase it. On iPhone, use Find My at iCloud.com or in the Find My app on another Apple device and mark the phone as lost. On Android, use Google's Find My Device to lock or erase it.
  2. Block the SIM with your mobile network so nobody can use your number or receive your codes.
  3. Report it. The Policía Nacional's online report service works in English, but the report must then be signed at a police station.

Insurers usually ask for the police report number. More detail, including the 112 emergency number, is in phone broken, wet or stolen in Tenerife. If you need a working number while you sort things out, a prepaid tourist SIM or eSIM can go in a spare unlocked phone.

Why does your phone overheat by the pool?

Because direct sun pushes it past the temperatures it is built for. Apple says iPhone works best between 0 and 35 °C ambient temperature, and warns that ambient temperatures above 35 °C can permanently damage battery capacity. Lying on a sunbed or a car dashboard is enough to trigger a temperature warning.

Move the phone into the shade, stop charging it and let it cool before you use the camera or navigation again. A phone that overheats indoors in normal use, or whose screen starts to lift, may have a failing or swollen battery; see phone battery replacement.
