Not for long. Apple says not to use an iPhone with cracked glass, as it may cause injury, and the same goes for any phone: splinters come loose in a pocket or a hand. Cracks also let dust, sand and moisture reach the inside, and water resistance is gone once the glass is broken.

Apple says it designed an entirely new chassis structure to make the back glass easier to repair, and calls the iPhone 15 lineup its most repairable yet. Apple's Repair Assistant table lists back glass as a separate part for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 and for iPhone 16 and later, but not for iPhone 12, iPhone 13 or iPhone SE (3rd generation).

Apple says making back glass an individual module lowered the cost of the repair for customers by over 60%: by 66% for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro, and by 64% for the Pro Max models. On older iPhones the back glass is not listed as a separate part, so the repair is a bigger job. On iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max the back is Ceramic Shield, which Apple says resists cracks 4 times better than the back glass on earlier models; Apple still calls it back glass for repairs.

Yes. Samsung says a Galaxy back cover damaged by physical impact or a fall can be replaced, and that a case or screen protector can reduce damage to some degree.
